  • Project Title:
Using Olfactory Cues to Nudge Schoolchildren towards More Healthful Food Choices
  • Key Findings:
The objective of this project was to examine how encountering of olfactory cues (i.e., scents) associated with healthy versus unhealthy foods might influence subsequent food choices, and scenarios where multiple scents are encountered sequentially. We found that prolonged exposure to the scents of unhealthy foods (e.g., pizza, cookie) led to higher likelihood of children purchasing a healthy item than when exposed to scents of healthy foods (e.g., apple, strawberry) or when exposed to no additional scent. In addition, we found that hunger moderated these effects.
